Self-portrait ; Marcel Göertz
My name is Marcel Göertz. Since March 10th 2009 I’m the father of Ference, since July 2001 I’m Desiree’s husband and since Monday August 15th 1977 I’m the youngest son of Sjef Göertz and Thea Koppen.

Together with my lovely wife, my precious son and our two Border Terriers Trevor & Lizzy I live in the quiet town of Weert (Netherlands).

Background

Just as with many other auto-didactic photographers, photography has always intrigued me. Throughout the years I’ve experimented a lot with different cameras and different photographic and artistic techniques.
Mid 2007 I signed up for a course at RICK, a regional educational institute for culture and art-education. Also since that time I’m working more in series of photos, for example the ‘temporary landscape’ photos and the short series called ‘Pride’, which I shot in early 2008. This series focusses on people who feel pride – pride for being who they are, pride for having accomplished something, or proud of someone else. Currently I’m working on a typology of trashbins.

My style

The photos I create are no typical family-album photos; the toning, contrast and sharpness are often accentuated to the extreme. This also renders my photography useless in terms of registrative photography – photography intended to capture reality as it is. Instead, I try to create artwork by capturing the shadow-reality, which is visible everywhere as soon as you want to see it.
In that way the viewer is urged to pay better attention, to see those things we often forget or even refuse to pay attention to.

My style often shows a typical colouring, with a dark high contrast composition, and features common scenes, everyday objects, inspired by numerous other artists and artistic and cultural movements such as surrealism and Dadaïsm).
